Commuting radius: deciding what “local” means for you

Regional job search fails quietly when the commute was never realistic. A forty-minute drive in July can become ninety minutes with snow, school traffic, or a single-track rail delay. Decide your hard limit before you fall in love with a posting.

Map three rings: walking or bike distance, a reliable public-transport corridor, and a maximum car commute you will accept on dark mornings. Then filter employers into those rings. This sounds mundane; it prevents months of applications that would force an unsustainable routine.

Ask employers early about hybrid days and shift patterns. Many rural clinics, plants, and municipal offices have fixed on-site expectations. Knowing that up front lets you negotiate location within the role — or walk away before interviews consume your calendar.

If you are relocating, visit on a weekday during rush hours. A weekend walk through the Altstadt does not reveal the Monday morning train from the neighbouring village. Treat that visit as research for your search strategy, not only as house hunting.
